Tradescantia spathacea (Rhoeo)

Tradescantia spathacea, also called the oyster plant, boat lily, Rhoeo or ‘Moses-in-the-cradle’, is an herb in the Commelinaceae family which was first described in 1788. It has fleshy rhizomes and rosettes of waxy lance-shaped leaves. Leaves are dark to metallic green above, with glossy purple underneath.

The Boat Lily is a striking and popular houseplant appreciated for its attractive foliage and easy care requirements. It has lance-shaped leaves that grow in a rosette pattern, forming a dense clump. Each leaf is dark green with purple undersides, giving it a unique two-tone effect. The leaves are glossy and smooth, with parallel venation.

Size: Typically, the leaves grow to be about 12-18 inches long and 3-6 inches wide, making it a compact plant suitable for tabletops or as a floor accent in smaller spaces.

Growth Habit: This plant grows in a clumping form, sending up new shoots from the base. Over time, it can form a dense mat of foliage.

Flowering: Although less common indoors, in its native habitat (Mexico and Guatemala), the Boat Lily produces small, three-petaled white flowers with purple bracts. These flowers are borne on short stems that rise above the foliage.

Light Requirements: Boat Lilies prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so filtered light is ideal.

Watering: It prefers evenly moist soil but can tolerate some degree of drought. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and avoid letting it sit in water, as it can lead to root rot.

Temperature and Humidity: It thrives in average room temperatures (65-75°F) and appreciates moderate to high humidity levels. Mist the leaves occasionally or use a pebble tray to increase humidity.

Maintenance: Regular pruning of yellow or damaged leaves helps maintain the plant’s appearance. Propagation is straightforward through division of the clumps or by planting stem cuttings in water or soil.

Toxicity: Boat Lily is mildly toxic to pets and humans if ingested, causing gastrointestinal upset. It’s advisable to keep it out of reach of curious pets and children.
