Coconut Palm Tree (Niu)

Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), palm of the family Arecaceae, are cultivated extensively in tropical areas for its edible fruit, the coconut. Coconut palms are found in tropical coastal areas nearly worldwide and probably originated somewhere in Indo-Malaya.

They were actually introduced to Hawaiʻi soil by early Polynesian voyagers, who brought with them a large number of crops, called canoe plants, to grow wherever they found land. Along with coconuts, the Polynesians also carried kalo (taro), kō (sugarcane), maiʻa (bananas) and other plants in their vessels.

Soil requirement: Coconut palms are tolerant of a variety of soil types, but they thrive best in fertile, well-draining soil. Adding compost or organic matter to the soil before planting can help improve its quality. Additionally, coconut palms prefer soil with a slightly acidic pH level between 5.5 and 7.0.
